Masterchef judge and award-winning local chef Benny Masekwameng has scooped himself a new job as the chef catering on South African Airways airlines.

But he won’t be saving economy fliers from chicken or beef sandwiches: he will be catering for business class’ international premium class and regional flights.

SAA’s acting general manager: commercial, Manoj Papa, said they were “excited about the partnership with seasoned executive chef Benny”.

“We are confident that his expert advice on our premium class menus and menus on our regional flights will delight our customers’ discerning palates,” he said.

On Thursday, Masekwameng invited some media to taste the food, which included pan-fried beef fillet served with grilled mealie pap and corn cake, braised spinach with crushed nuts and butternut as a main course.

For starters: tuna salad, and a secondary main was kingklip. For dessert, orange moist cake and coffee cream mousse was served.

The airline will maintain vegetarian, kosher and halaal options.

If you have the extra ching in your pocket, flying business class has just become worth it.
