Nedlac postpones meeting over Busa-BBC impasse

accreditation

The National Economic Development and Labour Council (Nedlac) has had to postponed its monthly meeting because of the unresolved impasse between the Black Business Council (BBC) and Business Unity SA (Busa).

The meeting, scheduled for Thursday, was adjourned after the two organisations failed to iron out their differences in another bilateral meeting on Monday.

The parties fell out last month, leading to Busa declaring that it would no longer allow the BBC to use its Nedlac seat and the latter saying it refuses to dance to Busa’s tune, in effect collapsing their cooperation agreement.

The Monday meeting, according to BBC secretary George Sebulela, had resolved that the organisations’ respective presidents would meet separately but that never happened before the Nedlac meeting on Thursday.

Busa chief CEO Tanya Cohen also did not offer much detail about the Monday meeting. “A meeting was held. The tone was constructive and we all agreed on the importance of a strong voice for business and the need to resolve the Nedlac impasse. We will be meeting again.” she said.

According to Nedlac executive director Madoda Vilakazi the parties failed to reach an amicable solution and several principals also could not attend because of the ANC National Policy Conference and it was decided the meeting should be adjourned. Vilakazi said he was hopeful the matter would be resolved before the end of next week.
