Cyril’s call was right

Cyril Ramaphosa’s email and the actual action by police at Marikana in Rustenburg are separate issues.

The brouhaha that surrounds the email is very unfortunate.

The behaviour leading to police shooting miners was a point of concern to most peace-loving citizens.

It cannot be that the mine workers, irrespective of how genuine their cause was, would go around with dangerous weapons killing other people.

As a responsible leader in business and politics, it was right for Ramaphosa to urge the relevant authorities to deal decisively with the alien behaviour by striking miners. South Africa is a democracy with rules governing workers’ disputes.

Whether the kind of action they employed was unwarranted is a separate issue which the Farlam Commission of Inquiry is tasked to probe.

Ramaphosa called for “concomitant action”. Suggestions in some quarters that he has blood on his hands are naive and can easily lead to passive citizenry.
