ANC NGC: Delegates share their thoughts

Nomalungelo Petela (47)

Buffalo City region, Eastern Cape

As an organisation, we have made progress with the Freedom Charter. I am particularly happy with the country’s social cohesion and integration. There is no longer the kind of discrimination we once lived under, even if there are parts of the country where there are issues. We must now really focus on economic policy because there are many people who are not working, especially our graduates.

Dagma Mamanyoha (53)

Mopani region, Limpopo

Local government must better understand the challenges on the ground and be equipped with the necessary skills to meet them. For example, the burning issue in my area is water. We have a huge water crisis. Local councillors and municipalities must work together to meet the needs of communities in the shortest possible time.

Dion Mnisi (44)

Bohlabela region, Mpumalanga

I am comfortable with the way things are going at the moment. My only wish is for change in some policies in branches I am supporting regarding what the president said about the manipulation of elections and the buying of comrades. Some people control members to support other people. This is what I want to be addressed at the conference so the ANC can be built up from the roots. Let us find a different way to address this through policy because, at the moment, it gives too much power to individuals.

Wende Marekwa (32)

Frances Baard region, Northern Cape

There are two areas that must still be addressed urgently: land and transformation. We are not doing well in these areas because we’re still living in poverty and are struggling. We must seriously look at economic development in this second transition. We also have more students each year who cannot be accommodated in the economy.

Zaine Maansdorp (50)

West Coast region, Western Cape

We have excelled in rural development. The only issue I have is that since the Mangaung conference, we had to resolve the issue of land reform and state-owned land, as well as municipal land. We have not addressed these. Otherwise, I am happy with everything. I also agree that there is quite a big backlog regarding housing that we need to try to address in the next two years.

Irene Mehlomakulu (32)

Xhariep region, Free State

My concern at this council is that of rural development, which is not happening quickly enough. National government needs to assist smaller and rural municipalities that are struggling. We need more resources in this area. The money we get is not enough to meet all the challenges facing the community and we still have to pay salaries. I would like to recommend that councillors be paid from the national fiscus so that we ease the burden at local level because we are not coping.

Moses Mashaba (32)

Vhembe region, Limpopo

We have a big problem of economic empowerment and employment in the rural areas where I come from. We must invest more in learnerships and scholarships that can change the lives of young people in these communities. Where I come from, there are many young people who are not at school and do not have access to information about universities and technical colleges when there is an opportunity to go to these places. I think we should look at things like workshops to inform young people about their options

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
