Best and worst moments of #Elections2016

accreditation

We look at some of the good, bad, and quirky moments from election day.

The ANC/UDM spat in KwaZulu-Natal: The UDM’s candidate, Teboho Goniwe, approached voters that the ANC transported to the voting station, and gave them UDM party stickers. Naturally the ANC was less than pleased and police had to intervene.

Just an ordinary citizen: Former president Kgalema Motlanthe and his wife Gugu went to the back of queue. They refused an offer from the presiding officer to go in.

President Jacob Zuma also waited in the queue when voting in Nkandla.

Fallen comrade: ANC volunteer, Armand Clarence Marthinus, who passed away at a voting station in Struisbaai in the Overberg was only 19 years old. The party says it was a suspected heart attack. This was one of at least three deaths on the day.

Key stabbing: Western Cape IEC head Courtney Sampson said the most serious complaint the IEC received was about an assault where a candidate stabbed another candidate with a key. The incident took place in Grabouw.

Going nowhere, slowly: City Press journalist in Cape Town, Andisiwe Makinana, reported that an ANC voter drove from Durban to vote for the ANC in Parklands (Ward 107, Cape Town), and was unimpressed to find out that the ANC did not register a ward candidate there.

Vote for football: While there was no violence in troubled Vuwani, voter turnout was still low as the community decided to play football instead. “We’re having a busy day here with all kind of players from grannies and old men to crèche kids. We don’t have a problem with anyone voting though,” said community leader Nsovo Sambo.

Healthy choice: Former president Thabo Mbeki walked from his home to cast his vote at the Holy Family College in Houghton. He paused on his way out to greet elderly voters waiting to vote on a bench.

Music for change: The choice of music for the DA branded bus in Ward 48 in Dobsonville at the DSJ voting station? Loud reggae.

And apparently ANC and EFF members had a dance-off outside a voting station eMfuleni, Cape Town.

Long day: IEC staff in Western Cape wilting but smiling nevertheless. One woman says she’s been up since 3am. They knock off at 7pm, City Press journalist Bienne Huisman reported.
