South African kwaito star Sipho “Brickz” Ndlovu has been sentenced to 15 years of imprisonment.

Sentencing was passed in the Roodepoort Magistrate’s Court, west of Johannesburg, on Tuesday.

Ndlovu was found guilty in July of raping his 16-year-old niece at his home in November 2013.

Ndlovu’s R50 000 bail was revoked after the conviction.

The minimum sentence for rape in South Africa is 10 years.

Magistrate John Baloyi said a “sentence of 10 years is grossly inadequate”.

Baloyi said the aggravating factors in the case were that Ndlovu’s niece was a virgin and that he infected her with a sexually transmitted disease.

The magistrate further stated that Ndlovu showed no remorse, despite evidence showing that the victim also suffered emotional and psychological trauma and attempted suicide.

The woman said in a statement that she was not coping well after the rape.

The court previously heard that Ndlovu had been married to his wife for 12 years and was a father of three children.
