On Sunday, Mandela Foundation ambassadors Lucas Radebe, Aaron Mokoena and Kalusha Bwalya, together with the cast of Isidingo, will hit the streets of Pretoria to take part in the Mandela Remembrance Walk and Run in memory of a world icon, the late former president Nelson Mandela.

Staying true to Madiba’s ideology of peace and harmony the foundation, in partnership with the Gauteng provincial government and the City of Tshwane, will for the first time have an open air market where families can enjoy food stalls, a beer garden and each others’ company.

Parents can relax and shop around while the children are treated to various games, face painting and jumping castles while child minders look after them.

The market will be open from 8am to 2pm.

Last month Tokyo Sexwale, at the launch of the event, said: “Today we are gathered in a safe space to remember Madiba.”

“In his name we always strive to remind people of his values in his long walk to freedom. This walk – and now run – symbolises a commitment to Madiba’s beliefs and ideals. There comes a time, as a country, when we walk and a time when we have to run.”

Those not participating in the event run can take pleasure in the Nelson Mandela exhibition, as they wait for their family members to cross the finish line.

Struggle activists Sophia de Bruyn, George Bizos – who turned 89 last month – and Sexwale will lead the walk that will go past the historic sites of Lilian Ngoyi Square, Tshwane House and Sammy Marks Square.
