A car crash involving Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa’s blue light motorcade – which allegedly sped through a red robot on the R27 outside Cape Town – saw a police officer hospitalised on Friday.
Both Ramaphosa and President Jacob Zuma were returning along the R27 from the Presidential Golf Challenge at the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate in Melkbosstrand when the lead black sedan in Ramaphosa’s motorcade crashed with a white Polo.
The driver of the white Polo – believed to be a British tourist – now possibly faces charges of reckless driving, Hawks spokesperson Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi told City Press this morning.
An eyewitness who drove past the accident scene next to the Bayside Mall in Table View after 3pm told City Press that a person was lying in the road, next to the black BMW, with a gold emblem on its front door as used by South Africa’s presidency.
Traffic moved slowly around the scene, where a small crowd of onlookers had gathered.
The other blue-light cars had continued on to Cape Town.
On Friday afternoon, another witness posted on a Table View neighbourhood Facebook page: “Ouch, I just saw an accident happen at the Bayside intersection.
“A little white car drove into the side of one as they were going through the intersection during a red light. The black car’s suited driver got out so I hope the little white car’s driver is also okay.”
On Friday, authorities refused to shed light on the crash.
Police spokesperson Frederick van Wyk confirmed that there had been “an incident” at the intersection, but said he could not provide more details due to the nature of the incident.
Mulaudzi said the motorcade skipping a red light traffic light was “hear say”.
He said the passenger in the deputy president’s car – a SAPS official – was hospitalised after the accident. The officer has since been released.
The two people in the Polo were not seriously injured, he said.
Just after midday, the presidency’s official Twitter account posted photographs of President Jacob Zuma teeing off on greens at the 18-hole Atlantic Beach Golf Course in Melkbosstrand, which is about 15 kilometres up the road on the R27.
The caption reads: “President Jacob Zuma at the #Sona2016 Presidential Golf Challenge at the Atlantic Beach Golf Estate, Cape Town.”
