The Hawks have denied that they investigated Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.
On Thursday, Madonsela told journalists that senior Hawks members were investigating her.
Her spokesperson, Oupa Segalwe, sent City Press a letter from the Hawks.
It requested that Madonsela explain in an affidavit why she had written two contradictory affidavits regarding the powers of her office.
In one of the affidavits, Madonsela had told the Western Cape High Court that her office had powers to make binding findings. On the other, she had told the Pretoria High Court that her findings were not binding, and were just recommendations. The Higher Education Transformation Network brought the complaint against Madonsela to the Hawks, accusing her of perjury.
However, Segalwe said the contradictory affidavits were a result of an oversight, which he said he hoped has been corrected.
Brigadier Hangwani Mulaudzi, spokesperson for the Hawks, said there was never a formal investigation.
“This does not constitute an investigation. This inquiry was closed as directed by the national head of the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations, Lieutenant General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, since it does not fall within our mandate and lacked substance. So we reiterate that there never is or was ever an investigation against the Public Protector or her office. Please tell your source to give you proof or a case number in that regard. The Public Protector can kick back and celebrate her victory. There never is or was any investigation.”
