Former president Kgalema Motlanthe was heckled when he went to vote at Killarney Country Club with his wife Gugu today.
“How do you sleep at night? Sir, how do you sleep at night?” shouted a young man several times as he interrupted Motlanthe midway through an interview with journalists while waiting in the long queue for his turn to cast his vote.
But it wasn’t long before the angry youngster was removed from the premises by some officials including a not-so-pleased Gauteng ANC secretary Hope Papo.
Motlanthe – who looked towards the direction in which the yelling came from – simply continued without acknowledging him
Asked about the incident, Motlanthe said it was the man’s right to have an opinion.
“That’s part of his democratic right, it’s his opinion, we can only respect that right,” he said.
Motlanthe stood at the back of the queue when he arrived at 11am.
“No one should ever allow protocol issues to push them ahead of the queue. We should not ask others to do what we are not prepared to do.”
He urged everyone to come out and make their voice heard in this election
“It’s a public holiday. No one should make an excuse.”
Asked whether the ANC had done enough to gain votes, Motlanthe would only say “it’s all in the hands of voters”.
But the party that he would vote for is the same one he campaigned for – the ANC.
“We will leave it to the voters to assess and judge us on the basis of performance,” he said.
A few people took photos of him on their cellphones while the rest, in the mostly white suburb, watched from the queue, seemingly unmoved.v
