ANC presidential hopeful Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma has been sworn in as a member of Parliament.
Dlamini-Zuma took her oath of office this afternoon in Deputy Speaker Lechesa Tsenoli’s office alongside former Rustenburg mayor Matthew Wolmarans, whose murder conviction was overturned in 2014.
The 12.30pm swearing-in came two weeks after the ANC amended its candidate list at the Independent Electoral Commission and bumped Dlamini-Zuma up to the top of the list making her its next candidate on the national list.
Wolmarans’ name was also published in last week’s government gazette as the party’s next candidate from the North West province. He is filling a vacancy left by former Eskom chief executive Brian Molefe, who had a short stint in Parliament this year.
News of Dlamini-Zuma’s deployment to Parliament has fuelled speculation that Zuma would appoint her into his executive because of her seniority in the party. But she had to be an MP before she can be appointed to Cabinet.
Asked to comment on this by the swarm of parliamentary journalists after taking her oath of office, Dlamini-Zuma said: “Well I’ve been informed by the office of the chief whip and the secretary general of the ANC that I am coming here to be a member of Parliament, they have not told me anything else. As far as I am concerned I am coming to Parliament to be a member of Parliament. I’m sworn in and that’s all I know.”
Dlamini-Zuma wore a green and gold outfit for the occasion and City Press spotted two of her daughters amongst her entourage.
Asked how becoming an MP would affect her campaign; she responded: “The branches will do that.”
Dlamini-Zuma described her return to Parliament as “interesting” saying she was prepared to serve in any parliamentary committee that the ANC assigned to her.
