Mpumalanga’s 2017 Grade 12 results may have decreased by 2.3%, but the province has improved in the number of distinctions and bachelor passes.

Then number of distinctions have increased from 8 084 to 8 941 in 2017 while bachelor passes are up from 22.9% to 23.4%. This year, 48 483 wrote matric exams and 36 273 passed. The overall pass rate is 74.8%.

Mpumalanga education MEC Reginah Mhaule announced the results at Leroro village outside Graskop today.

Mhaule said that she was elated with the pass rate achieved by girls. She said that 19 489 or 53.7% of the learners who passed were girls.

“This is a clear demonstration that the programmes aimed at empowering the girl child are beginning to yield satisfactory results,” Mhaule said.

“We must continue to work hard together with our communities to create an enabling platform for the emancipation of the girl child,” she said.

Here are the highlights of the results:

• Ehlanzeni district recorded the highest pass rate at 76.8%;

• Mbombela circuit in Ehlanzeni is the best circuit with a 91.2% pass rate;

• Of 551 schools, 18 obtained a 100% pass rate;

• Schools that perform below 60% have increased from 79 in 2016 to 106 in 2017;

• The most improved school in 2017 is Hlelimfundo Secondary School from the Volksrust circuit by registering an improvement of 64.4%

• In 2017, 505 learners passed mathematics with distinctions while 631 passed physical science

Top learner

Mpumalanga’s top learner this year is Thalenta Ngobeni (16). Ngobeni did his Grade 12 at Corn Oaks High School in Acornhoek.

He achieved seven distinctions with a 100% pass in mathematics, physical science and accounting.

“I expected to get distinctions in four subjects – mathematics, physical science, accounting and life science – because they were easy for me … actually easier than languages,” Ngobeni said.

Ngobeni is going to study actuarial science.

“I sacrificed sleeping and used to wake up at 2am in the morning to study,” he said.
