Economic Freedom Fighters leader Julius Malema has been welcomed by the families of the two party members who died while campaigning for the party in April and May.
Mpho Mothibe, the son of one of the murdered men, Tsietsi Mothibe, said he was unhappy because they had been kept in the dark by the police.
It’s been six weeks since the incident occurred. Mothibe said that the police had all the evidence they needed, including video footage of the perpetrators, but they hadn’t arrested anyone.
“Our family needs closure and we still see these people in the area,” Mothibe added.
Mothibe was at work when his father was murdered.
About 40 EFF members were injured after being ambushed while campaigning at Sethokga Hostel on the East Rand on May 15.
The story that he gathered from people who were present was that his father and the EFF group were singing when he got killed.
Tsietsi Mothibe and Kenny Monjamani died in hospital. Mothibe had been in an intensive care unit for several weeks and Monjamani had been in a coma for more than a month.
According to the EFF’s spokesperson, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, an eruption of violence occurred during the election campaign at the hostel in Tembisa.
The EFF also visited the crime scene.
Ndlozi said that the party was sending its condolences to the families to show that the EFF cared.
“We need political tolerance. We need to discourage fear to campaign. We need to discourage no-go areas,” Ndlozi added.
Malema promised to build new houses for the families of the men, who died after being attacked at a hostel in Tembisa.
