Reverend Canon Mpho Tutu van Furth is back at work now that the Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation has approved its administrative systems.
The board of directors suspended Tutu van Furth as the foundation’s executive director in January, amid claims from sources that there was a conflict of interest.
The foundation has denied these claims as lies and baseless.
At the time the foundation told City Press that, following a preliminary investigation, the board of the foundation had asked Tutu van Furth to step aside while a process was undertaken to tighten administrative procedures and practices, and mitigate potential for perceived conflicts of interests between the foundation and its partners.
“The outcomes of the process will determine the future,” said board spokesperson Don MacRobert at the time.
Yesterday, the foundation announced that it had concluded its audit of the institution’s administrative and governance systems and Tutu Van Furth was returning to work.
It said that on Monday, having completed its examination, the board pronounced itself “more than satisfied” with the foundation’s systems.
MacRobert added: “We emphasise that no impropriety was alleged, suspected or discovered. It was an internal exercise to ensure the foundation’s systems accord with the highest international standards.”
