Sandile Mantsoe, who allegedly murdered and set alight his girlfriend of seven months, Karabo Mokoena, will appear at the Johannesburg High Court on September 15 where his trial is set to begin.
Magistrate Piet du Plessis served Mantsoe his indictment on Thursday at the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court.
Mantsoe had appeared briefly at the court yesterday via a live stream but was ordered by Du Plessis to appear today so that the indictment could be served in person.
Mantsoe, who wore a chequered grey blazer, peach polo neck and black scarf, has been held at the Johannesburg Correctional Services, Sun City prison, since May.
He faces charges of assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, murder and defeating the ends of justice.
Mokoena’s body was found burnt beyond recognition in a veld in Lyndhurst, Johannesburg, in April.
In his bail application on July 30, the court heard that it is possible that Mokoena was alive when Mantsoe doused her with petrol and acid before setting her alight.
His bail was denied.

Mantsoe’s case will be heard at the high court, where 20 witnesses are expected to testify.
