Yesterday evening, City Press was threatened with an urgent court interdict in a bid to stop the newspaper from publishing the state security ministry report on election-related violence.
Mike Kgoroeadira from the State Security Agency told City Press during an urgent phone call at 5pm that the report was “classified” and, as such, it was “illegal” for the newspaper to run the article.
Just before 9pm, a furious David Mahlobo, the minister of state security, called editor in chief Ferial Haffajee to tell her that City Press was not supposed to have the report, which was compiled by the national intelligence coordinating committee.
“Comrade Ferial, you are not supposed to be in possession of this report,” he fumed.
“You are supposed to give it straight back.”
Haffajee explained that journalists often come into possession of reports that they are not supposed to have.
By the time of going to press, a summons had still not been served on City Press.
