Politics and the Gupta saga aside, our media has become obsessed with the financial crisis facing households in light of rising prices and interest rates. Newspapers, talk radio, TV and magazines are all looking for tips to help their audiences keep their heads above water. The thing is, unlike our politics, the answer is very unsexy and there is honestly no "secret to success" or magic formula that is going to make our finances transform overnight. It comes down to a simple money truth – you cannot change your financial situation if you do not know where your money is going every month.
Money is a funny thing; it doesn’t like to be taken for granted. If you are not interested in where your money is going each month, then it is not going to be interested in working for you.
Over the last six months I have been engaging with six contestants through the City Press Momentum Money Makeover competition. I have always believed in the power of budgeting, having used it to turn my own finances around after a financial crisis of losing my job and having a child all in the same year.
