His appointment as Blue Bulls Super Rugby forward and attack coach is a step in the right direction, former Springbok lock Victor Matfield said, adding that “it is a dream of mine” to become Springbok coach.

Matfield said his prior knowledge of the Bulls system would stand him in good stead during the upcoming season.

“I have been involved in the structures. It is great to come back into this system which I know very well.”

His appointment into the Bulls coaching structures means that he will have to relinquish his commentary position at SuperSport, something which Matfield says the company has accepted with good grace.

He will be leaving SuperSport at the end of the year.

Having been part of a Bulls dynasty that won numerous Currie Cups and two Super Rugby titles, Matfield said the pressure to replicate the success was on.

“I think it is a great time to start a new era where we can achieve a lot of great things. We have got the young players,” he said.

“I still believe we have the quality senior players and even though we don’t have many Bulls players in the Springbok team, that is something that will be rectified very quickly.”
