Transfer window keeps fans guessing

2015-08-30 15:33

With less than 48 hours to go until the end of the South African transfer window, football fans worldwide are awaiting its expiry with bated breath.

Tuesday is D-day for transfers, and clubs are still busy strengthening their squads.

A last-minute rush and deadline-day panic buying are expected in this period – which separates action from fantasy, rumour from truth, and winners from losers, as well as contenders from pretenders and, of course, the moneyed from the moneyless.

The PSL’s window period closes by the end of business tomorrow, while the English Premiership’s deadline is Tuesday at 6pm.

A source within Mamelodi Sundowns told City Press that striker Katlego Mashego was poised to join Bidvest Wits. The insider said Mashego and his representatives had met with the club’s management on Friday as they sought to reach an agreement.

Another Sundowns defender, Kwanda Mngonyama, is set to move when he rejoins Maritzburg United on loan again.

Though the 21-year-old did not want another loan move, he thought it might help him get game time so he could cement his place in the national Under-23 team, according to his agent, Tim Sukazi.

Sukazi said Mngonyama was frustrated by the turn of events at Downs when coach Pitso Mosimane said the SA Under-23 captain was not in his plans.

Kaizer Chiefs have already snatched Edward Manqele from Chippa United, while Ajax Cape Town have secured the services of 22-year-old Wits attacking midfielder Asive Langwe on a season-long loan deal.

In England, Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne was yesterday in Manchester ahead of his £54 million (R1.1 billion) switch to City.

Defending league champions Chelsea are still pursuing the signature of 22-year-old French midfielder Paul Pogba from Juventus in the remainder of the transfer window. But it was reported that the midfielder was demanding £300 000 a week.

Chelsea are also still hoping to secure the services of defender John Stones from Everton after the Toffees rejected his transfer request.

Real Madrid are expected to launch one last push as they attempt to finally get Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea.

Talks between Madrid and United have been deadlocked for several weeks.

Another United goalkeeper, Víctor Valdés, is on his way to Besiktas in Turkey after a fallout with coach Louis van Gaal.

Mario Balotelli has already joined former club AC Milan on loan from Liverpool
