In a season dominated entirely by Mamelodi Sundowns, it is no surprise the Tshwane outfit broke most records in PSL history. As old records were broken, new ones were set. Some were for better; others for worse.
Seventh heaven
This year’s campaign saw coach Pitso Mosimane lead his men to a seventh record PSL title, the most recorded by any South African football club since the establishment of the
16-team format in 1996.
New points record
“Bafana Ba Style” also lived up to their name after managing to finish the season in fine fashion by securing the most points tally in a single Absa Premiership season. Sundowns set a new record of 71 points, eclipsing Kaizer Chiefs’ previous record of 69 points, which they achieved
last season.
Q-Innovation kings
The Brazilians clinched three Q-innovation prizes for the second consecutive season. This meant Downs becoming the side with the most Q-innovation honours since its introduction in the 2012/13 season. They now have a total of seven
of these awards.
King of cups
By winning the Telkom Knockout, Mosimane became the first coach to claim all domestic trophies in the era of the PSL. He has also lifted the Absa Premiership, Top 8, Absa Cup and Nedbank Cup. And he became the only man to have beaten Chiefs in a cup final as a Sundowns coach.
Unbeaten run
Sundowns might have fallen short of making additional history by being the highest-scoring team, with 55 goals. Still, they broke a club record when they went on their longest unbeaten streak in domestic football, having managed to avoid defeat in 23 matches in all competitions. Chiefs still hold the longest unbeaten sequence in the league of 31 matches, set between January and October 2005.
Amakhosi’s unwanted record
The former defending champions had a dreadful run. They lost four consecutive games without registering a single goal – the lengthiest series of losses in their PSL history.
Chiefs’ CAF woes
The Glamour Boys were also knocked out of the CAF Champions League for a record third time in three consecutive seasons.
Bucs’ slow start
Orlando Pirates got off to their worst league start in 20 years after registering a record five points in the first six matches of the season.
The Students’ top marks
Bidvest Wits showed signs of sheer competitiveness in previous campaigns and the appointment of Hunt has brought about a significant change in the club. Hunt led them to their first second-place finish in the PSL table, an improvement to last season’s third finish. They also set the club record of 57 points.
Cosmos at it again
Jomo Cosmos managed to unwittingly set an unwanted record, following the worst scoring start by any team in the history of the league after managing to register a solitary goal in the opening seven league matches. They went down for the fourth time in the PSL era.
Ertugral’s ace up his sleeves
Muhsin Ertugral’s Mpumalanga Black Aces made history when they set a new club record by finishing fourth on the log for the first time in the PSL era. Previous campaigns saw them finish none higher than seventh.
Record attendance
Last year’s edition of the Carling Black Label Cup between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates attracted a record 94 807 in attendance at the FNB Stadium, eclipsing the previous record of 94 713, set when the Springboks locked horns with New Zealand in 2010.
