The national women’s cricket team made the country proud in February after beating Sri Lanka to qualify for the International Cricket Council Women’s Cricket World Cup, joining the likes of Australia, England, New Zealand and West Indies in women cricket’s biggest event.
Unfortunately they lost on Tuesday in the semifinals against England by only two wickets.
The team might not have taken the cup, but they represented the country superbly, and coinciding with their tour was the release of their very first advertisement.
Titled #AlwaysRising, it’s all about showing South African girls that they can be anything in their lives. It’s been close to 84 years since the team was founded and this advert was the first to give these women recognition.
The advert focuses on the team as role models and every young girl who keeps rising to the challenge. Its message is that these women are playing an important role in building the country’s future for female cricket players.
Dané van Niekerk, the captain of the team, said they’d received great support from South Africa, and that even more could be done to boost women’s cricket.
“I think televised games are very important in getting us more recognition. Since the start SuperSport has been on board broadcasting us, but it would be nice if SABC could also show our games.
“The support from South Africans has been the best it’s ever been. And I have to give credit to the media who have been brilliant. And my team mates who showed the country and the world what we’re about.”
