Turntables, mixers and phat drops that melt your face off...

These are essential ingredients for an awesome electro gathering, which is exactly what you can expect at the fifth Cape Town Electronic Music Festival (CTEMF) from Wednesday to Sunday. Workshops are at the Red Bull Studios in Bree Street and live acts will take place at the City Hall in Darling Street.

Here’s a quick guide to help you maximise your experience:

Chloé

Fri, Feb 5, 10pm to 12am

The Auditorium

Parisian DJ, producer and musician Chloé has constantly been at the forefront of the electronic music movement. She plays in Europe’s most prominent clubs and her catalogue boasts a prolific string of releases over the past two decades. She will also take part in a workshop on February 3 at 5.30pm.

Rudeboyz

Sat, Feb 6, 11pm to 12am

The Auditorium

Gqom has become one of South Africa’s most talked about underground genres. It was birthed in the townships of Durban, and the sound is characterised by sharp broken beats, chopped-up vocal samples, and brooding, monotone synths and baselines. You can also catch these pioneers in a workshop on February 3 at 4pm.

Niskerone

Sat, Feb 6, 2.30am to 4am

The Club

Another underrated character whose delivery of drum and bass sets is not to be messed with. This cat will have your body convulsing all over the place. The last time I had the pleasure of seeing this man live, his huge sound and mixing transformed a dry and dusty hillside into the cave dance scene from the second Matrix movie.

Goldie

Sat, Feb 6, 12am to 2am

The Auditorium

These are rugged sounds in a time when producers and musicians are more than happy to cook up soft-serve nonsense. This guy puts it down. Straight outta the UK, Goldie has been on the drum, bass and jungle scenes since before these genres blew up. His workshop session will be on February 4 at 6pm.

Nightmares on Wax

Sun, Feb 7, 6pm to 9pm

The Terrace

Nightmares on Wax is a dream to listen to. The man behind the name, George Evelyn – AKA DJ Ease – just keeps reinventing himself by allowing his art to flow in different directions. He is an electronic music composer from Leeds, England. He will share his experiences in a workshop on February 4 at 4pm.

DJ Kenzhero

Sun, Feb 7, 4.30pm to 6pm

The Terrace

We have many hip-hop DJs in the country, but most of them don’t put you on to any new music unless those new artists have gained recognition on pop charts. This man is reliable. He gives us impeccable blends and a taste in music that conveys his love for the crates. Do not sleep on this set.
