Five of the best South African TV villains

accreditation

Johannesburg – While we all like the good guy it's the bad guy that keep us glued to our TV screens.

Come on, admit it. We all love to hate the baddie.

Here’s a list of our favourite TV villains.

Sello Maake Ka-Ncube

Maake Ka-Ncube is one of SA’s most prolific actors. We first met him in the role of ruthless business man Archie Moroka in Generations. But his current role as bad guy Daniel/Lucas Nyathi in Scandal has added him to bad guy hall of fame. His film and stage credits include: A Dry White Season, The Rutanga Tapes, Taxi to Soweto, Othello: A South African Tale and The Lion King in London’s West End.

Henry Cele

Cele became a household name after playing the role of Shaka Zulu in the SABC miniseries of the same name. He appeared in the same role in the stage production. His other roles include appearing as a convict in Running Free, a killer in Letklaka, a detective in The Tangent Affair and a business tycoon in the isiZulu series Ifa La Kwa-Mthethwa (The Inheritance of the Mthethwa Clan).

Arnold Vosloo

Vosloo, one of our more recognisable Hollywood exports, loves playing the villain. He appeared as Imhotep in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns; Pik van Cleef in Hard Target; Zartan in G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra and its sequel, Retaliation; Colonel Coetzee in Blood Diamond; and terrorist Habib Marwan in season four of the television series 24, among other roles in TV and film. He has flourished as a villain in Hollywood.

Ronnie Nyakale

Nyakale is known for his award-winning role as gangster Papa Action in the first season of Yizo Yizo. Recently, he has appeared as Ngamla’s henchman, Cosmo, in Generations The Legacy, as well as on Rhythm City. He also played gangster Sylvester in the SABC1 series A Place Called Home and appears briefly as the crooked police captain in the heist film iNumber Number.

Robert Whitehead

Barker Haines is synonymous with villainy on South African TV. Whitehead has played the ruthless character on Isidingo for more than a decade without losing his cut-throat cold-heartedness. Whitehead’s baddy cred spans a long career. He has also appeared as Frank Larson in The Diamond Hunters, as an interrogator in Sarafina and Julio in Live Wire 2: Human Timebomb, among others.
