On Thursday afternoon, Gold Reef City’s Lyric theatre hosted a casual luncheon at which Sipho Hotstix Mabuse shared more information on the benefit concert he and fellow music icon Pops Mohamed will be playing in later this month.
Mohamed was not able to attend, but Hotstix – who celebrates 31 years in music this year – was there.
The two musos joined forces to raise funds for Readers are Leaders, a community project founded in 2013 that aims to promote a culture of reading among primary school children in disadvantaged areas.
It was explained that Readers are Leaders was established to teach pupils how to read and to motivate them to read by immersing them in great, well-told stories in languages they can understand.
The organisation does this by providing one-on-one reading assistance and also sets up book clubs in community centres.
“Sipho Hotstix Mabuse and Pops Mohamed are respected South African musicians,” said Gold Reef City marketing manager Gareth Kaschula. “We are proud to host these icons in their effort to raise funds for this great initiative.”
Mabuse and Mohamed will perform at The Lyric theatre on Friday, July 24.
Hotstix completed his matric at the age of 60 after he dropped out of school in 1969 when his music career started taking off.
This week, he said he went back to school because he believed in the power of education.
“This is why we are doing this,” he said.
