Rapper Khuli Chana became miserable and bitter after being shot by police more than two years ago. A new documentary, titled Picking up the Pieces: The Khuli Chana Story, has helped him heal.
Realising that “a lot of people still don’t know exactly what happened on October 28 2013” prompted the making of the doccie. And, if it is well received, it may even become a film.
Chana was shot at by police officers with an automatic rifle when they pursued the musician in a case of mistaken identity. He sustained minor injuries after the incident.
“It was a hideous time of my life,” Chana (born Khulane Morule) told City Press this week.
The documentary wasn’t easy for him to make. He described it as “emotionally draining”, but therapeutic. It was also hard for him to forgive because, at some point, the police wanted to charge him with attempted murder.
Morule paused before continuing: “This made me bitter and things got tougher because of it. Meeting people who had gone through similar experiences has been part of the healing process.
“But their stories were never told because they weren’t in the public eye like me ... I’m their mouthpiece,” he said.
Morule has now put the past behind him. Earlier this month, he reached a settlement of an undisclosed amount with the police.
“I’m relieved and I’m happy that it’s finally over, and I’m grateful that I survived.”
The Khuli Chana Story will be screened on Wednesday at the Mall of Africa.
