What’s fun about attending a family-friendly premiere such as The Lyric theatre’s Shrek The Musical is that everyone is constantly pretending to be on their best behaviour. And that’s just the adults.
The grownups must have felt like they were being chaperoned by their kids, as the little ones seemed to be in control.
Once the kids spotted a gap, they found the nearest person of equivalent height and turned the theatre’s opulent red and gold foyer into a jovial playground.
For a moment, TV presenter Leanne Manas’ little ones looked like they pulled a Vuyo Mbuli on her and said “sharp sharp” before they went off and had the time of their lives.
But the most fun was had by the adults. These included George Munetsi from Kaya FM, crooner Timothy Moloi, who is a natural with kids, and Olympic gold medallist Lawrence Ndlovu.
The little ones had a secret code that was visible from 1m and below, involving hand gestures and lots of twinkling eyes.
The airspace above was reserved for the big people, and also had a secret code. After a while, I learnt that there was a winking code, which meant that a couple had a connection, and they would be in contact after the kids were tucked in bed.
Who doesn’t like an unlikely love story, on stage or off?
