I went to a BDSM dungeon in Joburg

In a sex dungeon, people can act out their BDSM fantasies at the hands of a Master or Mistress. Intrepid journo Phumlani Sithebe Langa went to the Kink House in Observatory and got more than he bargained for

This excursion started off with my photographer and me running late. I did not realise what this would mean for me later, but I should have guessed, especially when dealing with a dominatrix.

We arrived at the Kink House in Observatory in Johannesburg and were met by Master and his submissive, Mistress Kink. Master was dressed in a button-up pink shirt, which set me a little more at ease.

We were ushered inside, where Mistress Kink and one of her slaves greeted us wearing all-black leather: thigh-high heeled boots and a sexy corset that nearly made my heart burst out of my chest.

Sexual liberation

The conversation began with Master and Mistress explaining to me just what BDSM is. It stands for a rather long list of things: bondage and discipline; dominance and submission; and sadism and masochism; and is basically a way of creating sexual pleasure. There are many stereotypes about it.

“BDSM is perceived to be dark and evil,” the leather-clad temptress tells me, “but it is far from it.” Mistress Kink explains that it is the constraint of a society, where certain acts and ways of life are frowned upon, that is the real problem. She points to a painting in her living room that depicts a woman in different forms.

“She surrenders herself to her dominant side and thus frees herself. Fifty Shades of Grey and other nonsense lead us to believe it’s all about whips, chains and sexual slavery.”

That is part of it, but BDSM is mainly about freeing yourself to live out your fantasies (as long as it is with a consenting adult) and to be who you are.

“You would never guess that a judge or senior official in society would practise BDSM, but they do.”

I asked how many she knows, but she wouldn’t say.

The path to domination

It’s been five years of sexual exploration for Mistress and she prides herself on having helped a few former sex workers to liberate themselves by becoming slaves. Slaves at the Kink House don’t perform sex, are paid well and work in a much safer environment. Her services have even aided a few individuals in the closet through her technique of forced bi-play, where a man can engage with any curiosity he may have while being guided by an expert and one of her stud slaves.

Mistress says her family is very religious (her mother is a pastor), but she decided to walk a different path and live out what she considers her true self. The House of Kink does not offer sex as a service, but rather uses people’s minds as a playground.

“If you google BDSM, every scene you encounter will end in sex,” Master explains. “We are fortunate enough to be able to hold our heads up high when we leave the house.”

It’s all in the name of self-discovery and heightening the sensory experience of sex.

A painful parting

The Kink House boasts candle wax, electric shock toys and the most extensive rack of whips, chains, gags and ropes I have ever seen. There’s even a cage that is motorised, and can be elevated and moved using a remote control. Their provocative attire is something they wear every day. This is truly a way of life for Mistress, who practises on a full-time basis.

The interview ends, but I soon come to realise that Mistress is not done with me yet. At this point, I am placed in the stocks, which she made herself, and given the option of a wooden cane or a synthetic one. I choose the wooden one and am issued with a safe word – “clock” – to help me keep time better in future. She then spanks me, making me count her strokes out loud and thank her after each one. She reassuringly strokes my back and calls me a good boy right before laying on a few more mighty cracks. It ends with her cane snapping on my well-toned backside.

The things we do for a good story.
