It’s Dance Umbrella again, and we’ve picked four great productions for you:
The Last Attitude by Nelisiwe Xaba and Mamela
Nyamza
The Dance Factory
February 27 and 28
Two veterans of South African dance join forces to (re)consider the
pas de deux – a canon of classical dance normally performed by a woman and her
male partner. This preview will be the first showing of the work before it’s
unveiled in New York later this year.
Ketima by Gregory Maqoma
The Market theatre
March 2 and 3
We got a sneak peak of rehearsals for Vuyani Dance Theatre’s Ketima
late last year while Maqoma was preparing for his 25-year dance-iversary, and it
looks like it’s going to be another powerful piece. The quartet considers how we
grow into movement, going all the way back to crawling.
Hero by Ivan Estegneev and PJ Sabbagha
The Market theatre
March 5 and 6
Masculinity is in the spotlight in a piece that observes the way
men, in performance and through their actions, discover their identity.
New Dance
Soweto Theatre
March 6
An exciting line-up of bite-sized 20-minute works from up-and-coming choreographers.
