This week, in her Humans of Mzansi series, photojournalist Zahra Haider spoke to children on their way to Friday prayers at the Masjid al-Jumuah in Mayfair, Johannesburg
MUSAAB AL HELUO (8)
We are from Palestine. I have six brothers and sisters. My eldest brother lives there, but he can’t leave to come see me. I’ve never been there, but I want to go one day. I want to look at the sea. I like to read and write stories. When I was little, I read the book Lazy Lion. It’s my favourite. I want to be a teacher at a university when I grow up. Maybe the borders to Palestine will be open by then.
ROOMAN QURESHI (13)
We got first place in the Natural Science Competition! We competed with so many schools and Crown Reef Primary won. It was awesome. My parents want me to be a doctor, but I got the lowest grade in my social science class, so it’s getting tense.
I think I want to be a lawyer, like my sister. We are from Pakistan, but my sister and I were born in Lesotho. I don’t know what I will end up being when I grow up.
AHSEN BAJWA (13)
I’m going to be a software engineer. It won’t be hard, because I like maths. If I didn’t do that, I would be a soccer player. Or a psychologist. This country is complicated because there are good things and bad things.
The bad things are because of Jacob Zuma and his dumb head.
I don’t like the corruption and robberies here. I think it’s best if I relocate because South Africa is going down the drain.
President Jacob Zuma should fix the country.
