The rape case against Nelson Mandela’s grandson, Mbuso, was withdrawn in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court this morning.

The 24-year-old was charged with raping a 15-year-old girl at the Mamma’s Shebeen restaurant and bar in Greenside on August 7 last year.

Two of the young girl’s relatives told City Press this morning that the case against Mandela had been withdrawn.

One of them said that this was because some evidence was outstanding, and that the rape charges could be reinstated at a later stage.

Phindi Louw, spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority in Johannesburg, was not immediately available for comment.

Mandela’s lawyer, Wesley Hayes, was also not immediately available for comment.
