Fresh protests have broken out near the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, where a police van has been torched and protesters used rocks to block roads and pelted stones at officers.

Classes at the university went ahead again today despite the ongoing protests by students, arson attacks and the arrest of some student activists.

Just after 6pm, City Press journalists witnessed two policeman running down Bertha Street in Braamfontein towards Jorissen street.
