Seeking families of Ellis Park disaster

accreditation

This year marks 15 years since the Ellis Park Stadium tragedy on April 11.

The tragedy, South Africa’s worst sporting accident, occurred when a stampede broke out during a Soweto derby match between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, and 43 people were killed.

City Press is looking to make contact with families of the victims. They would probably be young adults today.

The Accra Sport Stadium disaster, which claimed 127 lives, happened less than a month later that same year. This year, two young people will be invited to commemorate 15 years since both disasters in Accra, Ghana, with the families of victims in west Africa.

Their travel and accommodation costs will be covered in full.

To participate, please get in touch with City Press on Twitter or Facebook, or contact journalist Charles Cilliers on charles.cilliers@citypress.co.za. We’d love to hear from you and to tell your story.
