An embattled Tshwane is now without a mayoral candidate following a special sitting of the ANC national executive committee (NEC) which finalised a list of people who would be the face of the party as mayors in metros and strategic municipalities.
Speaking to the media late last night, ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe announced the ANC’s mayoral candidates for the 2016 local elections which are now just six weeks away.
Mantashe explained that Tshwane – a municipality which has been left vulnerable for the taking by the opposition – would be visited by a delegation of the NEC today for further discussions.
“The regional executive committee submitted three names to the provincial executive committee who were not convinced with the names submitted.
“There are now two names which will be taken to the branches to be discussed,” Mantashe explained.
Mantashe refused to give out the names of the two people that Tshwane would have to choose between.
The mayoral candidates for the metros are: Olly Mlamleli for Mangaung, Xola Pakati for Buffalo City, Xolani Sotashe for Cape Town.
In Ekurhuleni, current mayor Mondli Gungubele was given the boot in favour of Deputy Trade and Industry Minister Mzwandile Masina.
In eThekwini, James Nxumalo was ousted for Zandile Gumede who is also the chairperson of the region after beating Nxumalo to that title in a conference in December last year.
Current Mayor of Johannesburg Parks Tau will look to retain his position as the mayoral candidate for the major metro.
“Comrades with criminal convictions or pending cases were not considered for mayoral candidacy,” Mantashe said
“The ultimate objective is to ensure that the best amongst us is bestowed with the responsibility to lead.”
