New research has found that South African mobile users are not looking for the another Facebook-type app, they want brands to offer better educational, financial and health services on their phones.

Upstream, a mobile commerce accelerator, found that 88% of South Africans use their mobile phones for something other than calling or texting.

As mobile penetration exponentially increases in Africa, with sub-Saharan Africa expected to reach 9 billion mobile connections by 2020, most users want content that relates to education (25%), finance (22%) and health (20%).

With 81% of mobile users already using Facebook, Marco Veremis, CEO of Upstream, said that “consumers are not looking for the next big social media tool; instead, they want digital services in education, finance and healthcare, where there is currently a market gap”.
