Wits students ‘strangled’ in ‘vicious eviction’

accreditation

Students from the University of the Witwatersrand have been subjected to a vicious eviction in the early hours of this morning by private security dressed in riot gear, who remain on campus restricting access.

“At about 5.40 this morning we were woken up by fidelity security guards who told us we had five minutes to leave Solomon House. We refused. The doors around the building were all locked and about 50 of them began strangling us and dragging us across the floor,” said one student.

Yesterday the onsite registration process was bought to a halt by students calling for free registration. Students were adamant that registration would not take place until their demands had been met.

The university presented students with the option to work out a payment plan where registration fees could be settled by March but students rejected this, saying some couldn’t afford to pay anything.

The university campus currently has a heavy police presence who have been joined by heavily armed private security personnel.

Students are furious that their vice chancellor professor Adam Habib was seen on Morning Live this morning allegedly denying the protest action, which had been countered with brutal force this morning.

The university’s spokesperson Shirona Patel and Habib were both unavailable for comment by phone.
