It’s a box-office success. Happiness is a Four-letter Word was screened at South African cinemas this past weekend and has surpassed expectations.
The movie, which is based on the book by Nozizwe Jele, follows three friends – Nandi, Zaza and Princess – living life in the fast and fabulous lanes of Joburg.
Perfectionist lawyer Nandi, glamorous housewife Zaza and trendy art gallery owner Princess, all seem to be living the new South African dream but still to be searching for that elusive happiness they so desperately desire.
The movie saw 45 000 South Africans making their way to the local cinema and making gross box-office sales equating to nearly R2.4 million. The movie sold more tickets than international releases such as Fifty Shades of Black; 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi; Hail, Caesar!; and Trumbo.
Chief executive of Ster-Kinekor Entertainment, Mario dos Santos, told TV, film and new media news platform ScreenAfrica: “The opening weekend’s results for the film are simply overwhelming not only from a local content perspective but also in comparison to Hollywood content. Rewarding for the whole Happiness is a Four-letter Word team that great films get a positive response from audiences.” Ster-Kinekor has added another six cinemas to the current line-up in order to meet audience demand.
