Do we pass the test? You decide

accreditation

Upon reading Zakes Mda’s magisterial essay on journalism and patriotism, we began to measure ourselves against the standard he outlines.

Do we meet the measure of the patriotism he sets out? There is always a path to walk, but we try.

At City Press, we try to talk less and do more about balancing our offering because a media platform must engage a range of emotions and needs in readers.

The pages we’ve chosen to illustrate this story show that we give fair coverage to Cabinet (as media in a democracy generally will do); provide a platform for the discussion of important policy measures; do a lot of work on employment and unemployment (the biggest need among readers); and generally try to blend our coverage for the Sunday reader.

The people who want to hunt down and maul media freedom will not agree. I think that’s because of our investigative work, which sees every public rand as precious, so we follow it unapologetically.

We also know our business community can be less than competitive, and high on cronyism and corruption – so we write about that too.

A Media Tenor survey we commissioned earlier this year shows City Press to be balanced in its approach.

But finally, you are the judge and we’d love to hear from you.
