Readers respond to Professor John Volmink’s recommendation on the Sadtu jobs-for-cash scandal.

All office bearers – from senior teachers to directors-general – in teachers’ union Sadtu must be appointed independently. Private recruitment companies must he appointed to handle the selection and interview process, and they can then make recommendations to the education department on appointments.
Simon Haw, KwaZulu-Natal
Professor John Volmink’s recommendation of putting provincial departments solely in charge of appointments is a bit like putting Cruella de Vil in charge of the SPCA.
The KZN department is riddled with Sadtu appointees from top to bottom.

Remember, everything that unions like Sadtu are doing is because they are in an alliance with the ruling party.
The only remedy is for people like Zwelinzima Vavi and Irvin Jim to start another union federation that is free from the influence of the ruling party.
DB Mtsweni, Mpumalanga
What do you expect teachers to do?
Learning from the very corrupt government, Sadtu has created its own “luxury palace” so that it can compete with the money embezzlers of the government.
Well done, Sadtu! Keep up the good work. We all want to live the notorious, corruption-infested ANC lifestyle.
The reason teachers are doing this is because remuneration was much better under the apartheid regime than it is today under a democratic dispensation.
This government is paying us sh*t. Let them go to hell. Viva, Sadtu! Viva!
Maxwell Msomi, Stanger, KwaZulu-Natal
The investigation by Professor Volmink, the report and its recommendations are very good. But very good reports and recommendations, in and by themselves, don’t change things. The rot runs too deep.
Sadtu wields enormous power, accumulated over 20 years. Why did the education department not stop it all those years ago? Does anyone see Angie Motshekga implementing Volmink’s recommendations? Not on your life!
The entire ANC government is held captive by unions, deployment committees and incompetent officials who are placed in powerful positions because of their loyalty to the party.
Let us get rid of the ANC government. The power lies in the hands of the citizens.
Lyborn Rikhotso, Giyani, Limpopo
Professor Volmink suggests that the system should be overhauled in the entire department. This is a good suggestion, but the new system is not going to succeed because Sadtu is in partnership with the ANC. Sadtu will still influence decisions to appoint its own members. The only solution is to vote to reduce the ANC majority, or vote them out.
Saci Ncoko, Eastern Cape
Sadtu is an ANC brainchild and political ally, and like its mother, it is rotten to the core. Vote the mother body out of power and this monster will die a natural death.

I am really concerned about the future of this country in terms of youngsters, our future leaders. How does one explain such a ludicrous stance on corruption? Do we still blame apartheid for such malicious greed? I am at a loss for words. God intervene!
