It is not often that you see President Cyril Ramaphosa with a twinkle in his eyes. But he had one after journalists asked him if the absence of load shedding for the past month was part of an ANC electioneering plan, an accusation by opposition parties.

With a smile, Ramaphosa said it was unbelievable that there were people who were unhappy that there was no load shedding. He attributed the opposition’s remarks to the ANC campaign getting more energised.

He said:

We are getting into turbo-charged territory and that is what is worrying many people. They are terribly scared of the ANC.

The past few months have witnessed a toenadering between Julius Malema’s EFF and Jacob Zuma’s MK Party. The parties have not criticised each other publicly and Zuma even recorded a heartfelt birthday message for Malema.

But he may not be so happy to hear Malema’s remarks this week when he said their cooperation was just part of a strategy. “It is about arriving at EFF strategic objectives.

“We are going to kiss a lot of frogs along the way .... I have nothing to do with Zuma.”

Poor JZ did not know he was just the proverbial frog. This must hurt.

In order to demonstrate that its leader is doing well, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MKP) hosted a celebration at Zuma’s Nkandla homestead on Thursday. This after News24 reported worries over his health had surfaced following his collapse last Friday, in one of several recent episodes.

As a result, MKP was compelled to halt its campaign. But the party had issued a statement earlier, stating:

Our leader is fit, fine and ready to dance his way to the promised land!

The party claimed that the reports of Zuma’s poor health were all lies, trying to topple their “great unity and leadership”.

Many took to social media to criticise the party, with former Public Protector Thuli Madonsela expressing disappointment, saying the DA could have used other ways to send its message.
