WATCH: NPA explains why Van Breda arrest took so long

accreditation

Henri van Breda, 21, appeared in the Stellenbosch Magistrate's Court on Tuesday in connection with the killings of three members of his family. After the hearing, NPA spokesman Eric Ntabazalila explained the state's case. Watch.

After handing himself over to police on Monday, Henri's arrest comes almost a year and a half after father Martin van Breda, his wife Teresa and son Rudi were hacked to death with an axe at De Zalze Golf Estate in Stellenbosch in the early hours of Tuesday, January 27, 2015.

Daughter Marli, who was 16 at the time, and Henri, then 20, were the only surviving members of the attack. Marli survived the attack but was diagnosed with retrograde amnesia and cannot remember the incident.

Henri was granted R100 000 bail on Tuesday. The matter will now head to the Western Cape High Court in September.
