Four MECs who backed ousted KwaZulu-Natal premier Senzo Mchunu in his bid for a second term last November have been axed.
Mike Mabuyakhulu (economic development); Cyril Xaba (agriculture), Ntombi Sibhidla Saphetha (arts and culture) and Peggy Nkonyeni (education) are all gone.

They have been replaced with Sihle Zikalala (economic development), Bongi Sithole-Moloi (arts and culture), Mthandeni Dlungwane (education) and Themba Mthembu (agriculture).

Two portfolios made vacant by the elevation of Willies Mchunu to premier – public safety and transport – have been filled by Mxolisi Kaunda, the current chair of the transport portfolio committee in provincial parliament.

The appointment of Mthembu left the provincial chair of the South African Communist Party – which has been critical of the way in which the reshuffle has been handled – vacant, and is seen as a step to appease the ANC’s alliance partner.

Last week the SACP’s eThekwini region pulled out of the ANC election campaign for August 3, and called on the SACP provincial leadership to consider abandoning the ANC provincial election campaign.

Premier Mchunu, who is the ANC deputy chairperson, named the new cabinet members at this morning’s ANC briefing.

He was accompanied by ANC provincial secretary Super Zuma.

Zuma said the ANC had mandated Mchunu to “make a determination on how to improve the work of these departments in line with the assessment report”.

Zuma said the assessment of all municipalities and provincial government departments was “a usual exercise done at least twice a year to ascertain the progress we are making”.

Supporters of the former premier, Senzo Mchunu, say that the reshuffle is part of a purge of his supporters and will be continued in the ANC list process for the August 3 election.

This morning, roads into KwaMashu, north of Durban, were blocked following protests by members of the local ANC branches who claimed their choice of candidate was replaced by the ANC provincial leadership when they compiled the consolidated list for the municipal elections.
