Oscar-winning actress star Lupita Nyong’o was spotted shopping in Sandton on Tuesday in a rare sighting while filming in South Africa.
The 12 Years a Slave star was clearly trying to go incognito. She was dressed all in black and had a scarf covering her head while she was out shopping at Nelson Mandela Square.
Nyong’o was in Johannesburg to film the Disney blockbuster, Queen of Katwe.
According to film industry sources, she is now in Ghana.
A store manager at the Tie Stop in Nelson Mandela Square, who asked not to be named, confirmed to City Press yesterday that Nyong’o had come into the store on Tuesday.
She said the actress was very nice to the store’s staff members who “were excited to see a celebrity”.
Queen of Katwe is based on a true story. It tells the tale of Phiona Mutesi, who comes from an informal settlement in Uganda and becomes an international chess champion.
Nyong’o plays the role of Harriet Mutesi, Phiona’s mother, whose husband has died of an Aids-related illness.
The film project was officially launched in Kampala, Uganda, on March 28.
