The ANC’s eThekwini region in KwaZulu-Natal announced on Thursday that the branch general meetings to elect delegates for the pending elective conference will possibly only resume in June.
The region said this was in line with the instruction from the headquarters Luthuli House that all party events should be suspended for at least three months while the country battles to contain the spread the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic.
Mluleki Ndobe, interim regional coordinator, in a letter told the party’s branch secretaries and leagues that it was impossible to proceed with branch general meetings after government banned gatherings of more than 100 people just over a week ago.
Ndobe said a subsequent extended special national working committee (NWC) meeting confirmed the decision. He said the NWC “took a decision that all gatherings must be scaled down and limited to no more than 100 participants”.
“Given the numbers of the total membership in branches, it will be difficult to comply with the limit of 100 persons in bi-annual branch general meetings and branch general meetings as the required quorum will be more than 100 in most branches,” he said.
Ndobe said the NWC resolved that all conferences would be postponed for three months, subject to the review of the status of the Covid-19.
“The government has declared the Covid-19 outbreak a national disaster. This requires everybody to comply with the measures taken to curb increased infections of Covid-19,” Ndobe said.
He urged party members to stay at home and comply with the regulations of the national lockdown which came into effect at midnight on Thursday. It will stay in place until April 16.
