Government braces for a legal showdown as opposition parties and lobby groups challenge restrictions and call for parliamentary oversight

From next week, government will face a slew of court battles testing both the constitutionality of the Disaster Management Act and the legality of some of the measures it has applied to curb the spread of the Covid-19 coronavirus.

Opposition parties and civil society organisations instituting these urgent applications are adamant that the cases are about “protecting civil liberties” and are not point-scoring exercises.

The DA’s shadow minister of justice and constitutional development, Glynnis Breytenbach, has filed two applications on behalf of the opposition party: one with the Constitutional Court and another with the Pretoria High Court.
