The sentencing of kwaito star Sipho Charles Ndlovu, popularly known as Brickz, was postponed today till August following a change of lawyers.

The star was found guilty of raping his then 16-year-old cousin in 2013 at his home in Honeydew, west of Johannesburg, in the Roodepoort Magistrates’ Court.

Magistrate John Baloyi indicated that Ndlovu had failed to convince the court that he did not commit a crime.

Ndlovu was set to appear for sentencing but the case was postponed following Dumisani Mabunda’s withdrawal as his attorney. Brickz’s case was handed over to a new lawyer, Piet du Plessis.

Family spokesperson and best friend Sonwabile Mafumbu said the decision to change lawyers was made by the family.

“Sipho is being treated unfairly. Somebody wants to make an example out of him, we believe that the matter is not being looked into fairly and we need the truth.”

Mafumbu also referred to Brickz’s wife Nqobile Ndlovu, who was present at his appearance this morning and was understood to have assisted the victim in opening the charges against her husband.

“You see she is here today parading because she knows that the media will be here, she is behaving like ke die Summer Awards, trying to make sure that the father of her children will go down for a crime he didn’t commit … I know Brickz; I grew up with him and looked him in the eye and I saw that he didn’t do this.

“This has become a dirty fight and Sipho is not the first to go through this nor the last and we praying for Nqobile’s wellness. We want her to be a better woman and good example because every child deserves to grow up with their father. If Brickz is arrested the children will grow up and hate their mother, and what will she say? It’s almost woman’s month and we can’t even celebrate because we have seen what woman are capable of doing through this case.”

Also present this morning was Brickz’s aunt, Maryjane Ndlovu, who was in tears. She told City Press that Ndlovu was the only breadwinner at their home and he took the victim into his home in 2013 to give her a better future.

“Why would Sipho take this child from the location to town and rape her? Sipho has never even killed a rat he was always peaceful but the media has called him many names including an abuser and murderer and I know him. He didn’t do this. He has always supported and raised all the kids and helped the burying of many of our family members.”

Ndlovu said that the case had brought on a great deal of hostility toward her because she knew the victim’s family.

Brickz’s lawyer will be applying for bail.
