The SA Medical Research Council has been publishing weekly updates of the number of registered deaths in South Africa. This is vital to see the effect of the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic because deaths officially assigned to Covid-19 will be an underestimate.

Throughout the lockdown, the number of deaths has been lower than expected because of a decline in homicides and vehicle accidents. Countrywide, this to was the case in the week ending May 19.
