Thousands of EFF members took to the street on Friday and marched to Eskom’s head office at Megawatt Park, to protest the scourge of load shedding which the country has been experiencing. They were also protesting against the proposal to privatise the power utility.
Party supporters and members, clad in the organisation’s notable red, gathered at Innesfree Park and marched through the streets of Grayston Drive, Rivonia Road and Witkoppen Road.
Streets in the Sandton CBD were blocked off and traffic in the area came to a standstill as protesters, led by party leader Julius Malema marched to the offices to hand over a memorandum of demands to the power utility.
As rain poured down, protesters were not deterred as they marched on.
When they reached the utility’s offices, Malema handed the memorandum over to Eskom chief executive Andre de Ruyter.
Demands presented by the party included the suspension “of all processes to retrench workers and privatisation of Eskom”, the cancellation of “all debt of unemployed and indigents people, including the residents of Soweto”, and the completion of “the construction of the Kusile and Medupi Power Stations”.
“Eskom should submit detailed responses and plan on each and every one of the demands in 30 days,” read the memorandum.
In December last year, Eskom instituted stage 6 load shedding – for the first time in the country’s history. All though load shedding has continued this year, the power utility has managed to keep it at lower stages.
