The recent article headlined The Capture Mind-set, alongside a sidebar headlined State Capture Inc, contained incorrect and damaging information about our company and us as individuals. These inaccuracies must be corrected.

The assertion that we were “the people who set up the machinery” of state capture and “effectively ran the place” is a blatant lie with no supporting substantive evidence.

We emphatically deny these aspersions. We were arm’s-length service providers, as Integrated Capital Management (ICM) has been to numerous other companies in the past. Clive Angel and Marc Chipkin’s only role in Trillian was as an independent service provider, whereby we provided start-up and administrative services (for a limited period of time). This role is confirmed and supported in a number of press statements and, most importantly, in court papers and affidavits which have already addressed this issue.

From all information in the public domain it is clear contracts between Eskom and McKinsey, together with Regiments as SD&L partner (later replaced by Trillian), were birthed long before Angel and Chipkin provided any start-up services to Trillian.

The article also contains defamatory statements, alleging Angel was a “creep and a bully”. Furthermore, the statement about us being “highly functional sociopaths” is defamatory and unprofessional.

The City Press article was written entirely based on a statement by former Trillian management consulting director Bianca Goodson and published without seeking comment from ICM or its directors, in line with the SA Press Code.

In her statement, and further testimony to Parliament, Goodson testified ICM was “a shareholder” in Trillian Capital Partners. ICM was not and has never been a shareholder of any Trillian company, and CIPC documentary evidence proves this. The Trillian share register shows there is no record of ICM, Angel, Chipkin or Stanley Shane as a shareholder in Trillian, directly or indirectly, at any time. Throughout her statements and testimony Goodson inferred that ICM directors – Angel, Chipkin and Shane – were in some way employed by Trillian. Inferences like this are misleading, untrue and defamatory.

We support all government’s efforts to clamp down on any acts of endemic and systematic corruption. We fully support the establishment of the Commission of Inquiry into State Capture.

We are unable to sit by while Goodson continues to damage our reputation and integrity by making the state capture narrative about us, instead of the real protagonists. This has negatively impacted our ability to conduct our business and has damaged our individual reputations. This disingenuous sensationalist account does not do any justice to uncovering the truth with regard to state capture.

City Press tried to contact ICM for comment, but on its website the company had the following statement: “Recent media suggestions of any wrongdoing by directors of Integrated Capital Management are completely unfounded and without merit. On advice from counsel, we will, for the time being, refrain from making further media statements.”

City Press stands by the story.
