South Africa may have averted an exponential Covid-19 coronavirus epidemic curve, but this is no time for complacency as the sharp spike in positive cases of the disease in the Western Cape is an early indication of what we may see in the rest of the country.
This was according to Professor Salim Abdool Karim, chairperson of the Ministerial Advisory Committee, who spoke during a briefing with Health Minister Dr Zweli Mkhize on Friday night.
Mkhize noted that a pattern of infections had emerged in the last two weeks, which showed that 50% of the 611 deaths so far have been in the last fortnight and most of the 29 240 confirmed cases had also been over the last two weeks.
