New look, new job, same old Hlaudi

accreditation

Hlaudi Motsoeneng sported a new look at the press conference where he was unveiled as the new group executive of corporate affairs at the SABC.

But the former chief operations officer was his usual self as he referred to himself in the third person, paid himself compliments and used some of his favourite words like “hullabaloo”.

Here are some of the best quotes from the “only Hlaudi in South Africa”:

“In my view Hlaudi Motsoeneng is Hlaudi Motsoeneng and there is only one Hlaudi in South Africa. No one else.”

“The SABC is very interesting. I am also very interesting. This new look, it’s because I am going to another position.”

“Your questions are not tough. They are too easy.” – Hlaudi to journalists at the press conference

“I cause havoc everywhere I go.” – On his trip to Mauritius where he will advise broadcasters in that country

“I am aware that I sell your papers, and I am happy for you.” – To journalists who write about him. He also said he was a brand and always trending on Twitter.

“I am going to apply for the job. It’s a given. And I qualify!” – On applying for the chief operations officer job that he had just vacated

“When I came here there was no SABC. There was just a disaster.”

“Everywhere I go, people support Hlaudi, more so in the rural areas.”

“I will never have stress. I am a different animal.”

He also thanked the people who supported him: “I want to applaud people who recognise this wonderful person called Hlaudi – Dr Ben Ngubane, Ellen Tshabalala, Professor [Mbulaheni] Maghuve and the SABC board.”

“I’m not going there, don’t spoil the party man. Now you are talking about employer-employee issues.”– Motsoeneng’s response when a journalist asked about the R11.4 million bonus he was allegedly paid.

Motsoeneng reminded everyone that he was his own man: “I was not produced by media. I was not produced by individuals. I have my own brain, I have my own vision.”

And what does he plan to do in his new role?

“The media, you are now my partner. Part of my role is to manage stakeholders and we are going to have fun with you.”

“We are going to have many parties now; breakfast, dinner and enjoy.”

Moja Love's drug-busting show, Sizokuthola, is back in hot water after its presenter, Xolani Maphanga's assault charges of an elderly woman suspected of dealing in drugs upgraded to attempted murder. In 2023, his predecessor, Xolani Khumalo, was nabbed for the alleged murder of a suspected drug dealer. What's your take on this?
